In the Melee of our Existence

Drink deep the red of your soul,
And revel in its lusty waves;
Rise up and soak in the radiance of your being,
And breath in the air of your freedom.

Tear down your vain facades,
And take on those naked blows;
Bite into those censoring chains,
And rage against their shadowy grip.

Shatter till you find it in you,
To stand up once again;
To breathe in those precious petals of sorrow,
Doused thick in resentment,
And watch it float away,whithering,
Like scars from a forgotten melee.

Let your song beat to your heart's rhythm;
Let your feet feel the pulse of your earth;
Let it resound, even when you hold down your quiver;
Let it echo, even in the wake of your silence.

To Soar Once More

When I walk beside her, I am the better man
When I look to leave her, I always stagger back again
Once I built an ivory tower so I could worship from above
When I climbed down to be set free, she took me in again

- From 'Hard Sun', Indio's single "Hard Sun" originally featured on his debut "Big Harvest" in 1989. Later covered by Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam for Sean Penn's film "Into The Wild" in 2007.

Waiting for Daybreak

   Waiting for Daybreak

Sometimes the paint brush runs dry.
And the art stops beating.
Thoughtless sepia canvases lie awake;
Like songs that died on your tongue.

Old paintings are like old friends whom you run into after many years
They just look, smell and taste different.
You never quite know what to do with them.

So I gave her a wash in aquamarine and a breath of the sea,
Laced her up with a simple kiss, and placed her on my wall
And she slapped me back to life.

An Inverted Dream

An Inverted Dream from Alok N R on Vimeo.

An Inverted Dream is about a girl who wakes up in an upside down house. The film follows her through a surreal journey as she tries to figure out how and why she got there. Set to the song 'Wait for Me' by Moby , 'An Inverted Dream' was my final year animation project at MIT Institute of Design,Pune and was completed over a period of one and a half years.

Brave

Ok, so what could trump a year ending footnote illustration as the last post of the year? Well, the answer is music. I discovered Tejas Menon through my friend Arvind. Tejas is a musician par excellence and he creates some of the most soulful and amazing work, I've heard in a long time. Do check out his youtube channel here. I've been tripping over this particular song called 'Brave' for some time now :)

MCAHNY nom nom nom

To all the millions of invisible followers of my blog, MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR! If this is gonna be the last post of the year then...well..heck have some cake and celebrate it.

Norma Jeane Mortenson

The is a rework of a painting of Marilyn Monroe that I had done about 2 years ago. Despite the monumental effort it took me back then,there were a few things about the painting that always bugged me. So finally I took some time off to rework on it in great detail. I wanted to test out some things I had learnt painting the skin and hair after last week's Tyrion painting. The lighting ,facial features,the backdrop and the over all colour balance were a few of the things I paid attention to this time around. Went for a vintage painting feel as well. Marylin doesnt sport her classic iconic look in this pic and therefore its hard to recognize her by face. The pose and outdoor setting were challenging and I took my own sweet time with it as it was a lot of fun.

Here is a link to the old painting, it was pretty sad but still you can check it out.

The Half-man

“Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armour yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you.”

An Inverted Dream (Coming Soon)

A warm Hi to all the millions of invisible readers of my blog. :)

I think it would be sacrilegious to continue blogging without addressing the fact that I have actually completed my final year animation film 'An Inverted Dream'. :) It has taken me about a year and ten months to make this 4 min 30 sec film. Currently I am unable to share the film with you as it is making (sigh) the festival rounds. -_-. However I shall update this post with art n other stuff from the film.

To All My Teachers

There is a lot I wish I could tell my teachers if I meet them again. Teachers from pre-school, nursery school, school, college and every other walk of life. Many of them I might not meet ever again, even if I do I may not remember their names, many more are faces that float in and out of my reveries and many many more I have, I must confess, I have forgotten. Its a sad thing, but its true.

So on this teachers day, let me just lose myself once again in those memories,let me relive once again those moments that I may only glimpse in my dreams. A small token of love to all my wonderful teachers and for all the goodness they've brought into this world.

Freedom of Spirit

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be?
